Prof. Abel's Picks

Welcome to the most curated part of this site!

Picks will be added and removed and moved as I find them, become fond of them, and maybe even fall out of love with them. These very specific clippings are very special to me!
The relative obscurity of this series means that when I find a fun interation on these pages, it kind of feels like I'm the first person to discover it! I know is silly but with the more organic and alive feeling layouts of these scenes it sometimes feels evey time I open one of these books, I discover something new. It makes me happy and always brings me back to them.

I have a lot of admiration for Kazunori Aihara and his art. Being the sole artist credited for 12 of the 13 Find Pokemon! books, I've been delighted to see the effort and craft and specificity of these scenes. When going in to take pictures of my picks here, I was shocked to see that almost every single page had something that I gravitated toward. For a series that has over 165 fully colored scenes, with over 16,000 individual creatures and people individaully drawn (traditionally done in the first 13!), it is really impressive that the quality of these books kept up. That feels like passion to me :).

Aihara doesn't put the same amount of effort and consideration into each Pokemon of course! The pages would be much too busy if that was the case hehe (not to mention, would take significantly longer to make!). I laugh a little bit when I see a Pokemon who is so clearly just traced or line for line copied from official art.

Like this absolute charmer here!

I'm an artist myself and I understand when shortcuts are neccessary when you wanna get a full piece done on a deadline! So when I see the interactions between Pokemon and people that are unnusual and specific and active and silly- My heart fills with joy! I feel like I can see a lot of Aihara's sense of humor in these pages. I don't know much about Aihara (despite looking online quite a bit!), but if I could say anything to him it would be that I am inspired by his work and in someway, always have been. From a seconder to grown adult, Aihara's work has been with me. I hope that he has been able to see the impact of his work and feel/felt the love that people have for it.

With that ramble said (...typed), please enjoy my collection! At some point, I want to set up a submission form here for trainers to show me their favorite scenes in the series so keep an eye out for that:)
Consider this page an extra challenge after you have found every other Pokemon in these books! If you hover on the images in the gallery below it will tell you which book it is from, it WON'T tell you where in the book they are hehe.

Happy Searching, Trainers!
